Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter, and they consist of a nucleus composed of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons. The number of protons in an atom's nucleus determines its atomic number, which defines the chemical element to which it belongs.
Molecules are formed when two or more atoms bond together chemically. The properties of a molecule depend on the type of atoms it contains and how they are bonded together.
Ions are atoms or molecules that have an unequal number of protons and electrons. This creates an overall electrical charge, either positive or negative. Positively charged ions are called cations, while negatively charged ions are called anions. The properties of ions play a critical role in many chemical reactions and biological processes.
